ADT and Dump Truck
Haul truck operation, tipping safety and haul road rules.
Dump truck accidents are costly. This course covers haul road safety, safe tipping, spotting and working near excavators.
Why this training matters
An articulated dump truck incident is expensive before anybody is hurt. The machine is worth millions, it usually takes the haul road or a tip point with it, and production stops while the scene is cleared and investigated.
Tipping is where the worst of it happens. Reversing to an edge without a spotter or a berm, tipping on ground that is soft or falling away, or raising a loaded bin on a cross slope can put the truck over. A raised bin also lifts the centre of gravity a long way, which is why the truck has to be straight and settled before the body goes up, and why it must come down before moving off.
The rest is haul road discipline. Right of way, following distance, blind rises, loaded versus empty priority, and what the machine does on a wet road with a full body. None of it is complicated, all of it is routine, and the incidents come from the shift where the routine slipped.
What you will learn
- Truck components and dashboard controls
- Pre-start checks and brake tests
- Haul road rules and right of way
- Safe loading and positioning for the excavator
- Tipping on stockpiles and at hoppers
- Working on inclines and in adverse weather
- Emergency and park-up procedures
The legal requirement
An articulated dump truck is construction vehicle and mobile plant under regulation 23 of the Construction Regulations, 2014, and on a mine it also sits under the employer's training duty in the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996.
Regulation 23 requires that operators are trained, certified competent, and hold written authorisation to operate that plant, together with a medical certificate of fitness issued by an occupational health practitioner. It requires the operator to carry out a daily inspection of the vehicle.
It also puts duties on the contractor. The plant must be of acceptable design and construction, maintained in good working order, and fitted with structures designed to protect the operator from crushing if the machine overturns, or from falling material. On a haul road with loaded trucks and an excavator working above, those structures are not a formality.
What this adds up to is a paper trail as well as a skill: assessed competence on the machine type, a current medical, a written authorisation, and a daily inspection record. Our licence and the assessment records cover the training half of it.

Practical assessment
A theory paper on controls, haul road rules and legal duties, then observed haul cycles. The practical covers the pre-start and brake test, positioning for the excavator, loaded travel and right of way, tipping at a stockpile and at a hopper, working on an incline, and park-up.
Prerequisites
Delegates must hold a valid medical certificate of fitness as required by regulation 23, and be able to follow the assessment in the language of instruction. Existing operators should bring their current licence and any site authorisation.
What is included
- ADT machine for the practical
- Training manual
- Licence card
Certification
Delegates who complete the programme and are found competent receive the CETA and TETA aligned licence, valid for 2 years. Attendance registers and assessment records are handed over to your health and safety department for the training file.
Refresher and re-certification intakes are available before a certificate lapses. Tell us the expiry dates and we will schedule around them.
ADT and Dump Truck questions
On yours. Haul road rules, tip points and the interaction with your excavator are site-specific, and an operator assessed on your road arrives on shift already knowing it. We work around your production schedule.
Tell us what you run and we will scope it. The programme is built around articulated dump trucks, and we cover rigid haul trucks where that is what your operators will be driving. The licence records the machine type assessed.
Yes. Regulation 23 of the Construction Regulations requires a medical certificate of fitness from an occupational health practitioner, and it is separate from this training. Arrange it before the licence is relied on.
Approach and reversing to a tip point, the role of the spotter and the berm, checking the ground before raising, keeping the truck straight and settled, and getting the body down before moving off. Tipping is where the serious incidents cluster, so it gets proper time.
Shorter than the novice programme, and we quote it once we know the crew's current licences and time on the machine. Licences run for two years and we flag them before they expire.
