INTRA™ ERGOTRAC

Fundamentals of Ergonomics

Musculoskeletal disorders and what the Ergonomics Regulations of 2019 require, including reporting duties and COIDA. Covers spinal health, body mechanics, workstation and driver posture, and vibration.

INTRA ERGOTRAC e-learning programme cover

Musculoskeletal injuries build up quietly and then cost years. The Ergonomics Regulations of 2019 put a duty on the employer to manage that. This programme covers what the regulations require and the practical changes that prevent the injuries.

Why this programme matters

Ergonomics has been a legal duty in South Africa since the Ergonomics Regulations came into force in 2019, and it is still the most widely ignored one. There is no dramatic incident to investigate, so it does not compete for attention with machinery and heights.

The cost arrives slowly instead. Musculoskeletal disorders build over years through repetitive handling, poor workstation layout, awkward postures and whole body vibration in machine cabs. By the time somebody reports it the damage is often permanent, and it becomes a COIDA matter with a long tail.

The regulations require the employer to identify ergonomic risk and act on it. This programme covers what they require, how to recognise and report a musculoskeletal disorder, the anatomy behind the injuries, and the practical changes to workstations, seating, driving positions and handling technique that prevent them.

Legislation is summarised for orientation and is not legal advice. Always check the current text of the Act and its regulations, or take advice.

What the programme covers

  • Ergonomics fundamentals and the role of the ergonomist
  • Regulatory obligations under the Ergonomics Regulations of 2019
  • Recognising and reporting musculoskeletal disorders, and COIDA compliance
  • The anatomical and physiological foundations behind workplace injury
  • Spinal health and how to maintain it
  • Body mechanics, workstation set-up, driver posture and vibration hazards
  • Action planning and continuous improvement

What you will be able to do

  • Recognise a musculoskeletal disorder and know the reporting duty that follows
  • Apply the Ergonomics Regulations of 2019 in your own workplace
  • Set up workstations, seating and driving positions that do not cause injury
  • Write and run an organisational action plan

Who it is for

South African employers and employees needing workplace health and safety knowledge aligned to current legislation

How it is delivered

This is a self-paced online programme. Learners work through it at a time and place that suits them, on any device, so it does not take a shift off the roster. It carries the knowledge and awareness component only. Anything requiring practical demonstration is done face to face.

The programme is INTRA™ legal compliance material covering the OHS Act and its regulations. It is non-credit bearing, which means it is not a unit standard or a qualification. It is included in the INTRA™ PRIME licence.

ERGOTRAC questions

Yes. The Ergonomics Regulations of 2019 place a duty on employers to identify and manage ergonomic risk. It is not optional or advisory.

No, and that assumption is the problem. Manual handling, machine cab vibration, awkward postures in plant work and repetitive tasks on a production line are all in scope, and the injuries there tend to be worse than a badly set up desk.

Yes. Recognising a musculoskeletal disorder, the reporting obligations that follow, and COIDA compliance are covered.

No. INTRA legal compliance programmes are non-credit bearing.
