INTRA™ HAZCHEM
Introduction to Hazardous Chemical Substances
Chemical types, exposure routes and the Hazardous Chemical Agents Regulations with GHS labelling. Also medical surveillance, storage, safe work practices, protective clothing, emergency response and first aid.
Employees have a legal and a moral right to be told what they are working with. This programme covers the chemicals on your site, the routes by which they get into people, the regulations that govern them, and what to do when something goes wrong.
Why this programme matters
The Hazardous Chemical Agents Regulations start from a simple principle: people have a right to know what they are working with. That means the substance, how it can get into the body, what it does, and what to do about an exposure.
The everyday failures are mundane. Decanting into an unlabelled container. A safety data sheet nobody has read, filed in an office nobody visits. Gloves chosen because they were in the store rather than because they resist that specific chemical. Each of those is small until somebody is exposed.
This programme covers the classification and labelling system, the control hierarchy, storage, medical surveillance and the first aid response, so the people handling chemicals understand the system that is supposed to be protecting them.

Who it is for
Employers needing chemical safety compliance, employees working with hazardous chemical substances, and organisations in manufacturing, laboratories, construction, mining and agriculture
How it is delivered
This is a self-paced online programme. Learners work through it at a time and place that suits them, on any device, so it does not take a shift off the roster. It carries the knowledge and awareness component only. Anything requiring practical demonstration is done face to face.
The programme is INTRA™ legal compliance material covering the OHS Act and its regulations. It is non-credit bearing, which means it is not a unit standard or a qualification. It is included in the INTRA™ PRIME licence.
HAZCHEM questions
Anyone who handles, decants, stores, transports or works near hazardous chemical substances, plus the supervisors responsible for them. It is not only a laboratory concern: workshops, plants, farms and cleaning operations all fall in scope.
Yes. Classification, the GHS pictograms and labelling requirements are covered, along with how to read and use a safety data sheet.
It covers biological monitoring and medical surveillance as concepts and as legal requirements. Arranging the actual surveillance programme is a separate occupational health function.
No. INTRA legal compliance programmes are non-credit bearing.
