INTRA™ HIRA
Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
Hazard categories and how to spot them, the Funnel Method and RAG tagging, running a structured assessment end to end, then applying the hierarchy of controls and closing out corrective actions.
Risk assessment fails in one of two places: the hazard nobody wrote down, or the control nobody closed out. This programme teaches how to identify, analyse and control risk across every part of an operation, using a structured method rather than a walk round with a clipboard.
Why this programme matters
Risk assessment is the foundation the rest of a safety system sits on. Section 8 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act requires the employer to identify hazards and take steps to remove or reduce them before relying on protective equipment, and every other control you put in place is meant to follow from that assessment.
In practice risk assessments fail in familiar ways. They are done once and filed. They list hazards without ranking them, so everything looks equally urgent and nothing gets fixed. Or they identify a control and never close it out, which leaves you with a document proving you knew about the hazard and did nothing.
The method taught here is deliberately structured, including the Funnel Method and RAG tagging, so that two different people assessing the same area reach broadly the same answer. That repeatability is what makes an assessment useful as evidence rather than just paperwork.

Who it is for
South African employers and employees who carry a legal safety obligation and want to reduce workplace incidents
How it is delivered
This is a self-paced online programme. Learners work through it at a time and place that suits them, on any device, so it does not take a shift off the roster. It carries the knowledge and awareness component only. Anything requiring practical demonstration is done face to face.
The programme is INTRA™ legal compliance material covering the OHS Act and its regulations. It is non-credit bearing, which means it is not a unit standard or a qualification. It is included in the INTRA™ PRIME licence.
HIRA questions
Often yes. Most sites have a baseline assessment somewhere. The value here is in doing issue-based and continuous assessment properly, ranking risk consistently, and closing corrective actions out instead of listing them.
Anyone who contributes to or signs off a risk assessment: safety officers, supervisors, health and safety representatives, and the people who actually know the task being assessed.
No. It gives your people a shared method and vocabulary so their input into a HIRA is useful. Complex or high consequence assessments still warrant an experienced facilitator.
No. INTRA legal compliance programmes are non-credit bearing, and are included in the INTRA PRIME licence.
